Public-interest participation costs: CRTC 2026-201

In Telecom Regulatory Policy CRTC 2026-201, the Commission increased the fee rates in its schedule for eligible professional work in telecommunications costs applications by 45.44%, reflecting inflation since the 2010 rates. The updated rates apply to telecommunications costs applications filed after August 7, 2026.

The usual limit is $75,000 per applicant, per proceeding. When a notice of consultation provides an intervention period of at least 90 days, an applicant may seek pre-approval for costs above that limit. The policy says pre-approval requests should generally be filed no later than 30 days after the notice is published. Costs claimed must still be necessary and reasonable.

What this means for Canadian VRS advocacy

Groups advocating for telecommunications users, including those working on Video Relay Service issues, can review the costs-award criteria when considering participation in a relevant CRTC proceeding. Eligibility and the amount of any award are decided by the CRTC. This is not a grant announcement, a guarantee of funding for CDTA, or evidence that CDTA has applied for or received an award.

The Broadcasting Participation Fund shown in some public discussions is a separate mechanism for participation in broadcasting matters, not the telecommunications costs-award process described in this policy.

Correspondence and filings are different

A draft, a sent email, a received reply, and a formal filing describe different events. Future records will state their source and known status. The presence of a document here will not, by itself, mean it was filed or accepted.
